I think I’ve been on a few flights like this …

Filed under: General — tim CARMICHAEL @ 10:55 pm

Just saw this on the news tonight, scary landing.  I’ve had a few like this over the years.  Back in the early nineties I was flying 2 or three times a week between cities and I remember a Dan Air flight landing at Heathrow from Amsterdam in dirty weather bouncing around everywhere and finally touching down with great relief when suddenly the engines (which I was sitting right next to) span up really fast and we went near vertical and left with lockers spilling their guts and everyone screaming.  After a short time the captain came on the radio to say we had a near miss with an Iberia jet that had missed its exit point and stopped on the runway… I also remember flying on the day of the ‘87 storms and my flight from Aberdeen having to make three atempts to land at Birmingham although not as traumatic (turboprop).

T-Mobile Mail is dead, Long live the Samsung i780

Filed under: HTC, Microsoft, Mobile, T-Mobile, WindowsMobile — tim CARMICHAEL @ 7:10 pm

Well it had to happen.  the excellent T-Mobile Mail (HTC S620) is discontinued.  No stock left, all traces erased from the T-Mobile website.  I am really sad as this was a fantastic device, the best I ever owned.  Now its unlikely to ever get an official 6.1 upgrade from T-Mobile, which will mean unlocking the phone and applying an HTC image… when it arrives.

So what next?  Well the Samsung i780, thats what.  Almost identical dimensions plus assisted GPS and WiFI.  I almost bought one on Orange, but their stingy data allowance means I’ll wait for an unbranded device and continue with T-Mobile.  There is no unlock for this yet either. I don’t like the number keys being two in, they should either be on the left edge or one in.  The only other thing I’m not sure about is that this is a WM6 Pro device (PPC) not a smartphone,  and I’ve not yet seen the need for a touch screen on a phone, and theres a stylus to lose, but we will see.

Remember Cairo?

Filed under: Microsoft, Vista — tim CARMICHAEL @ 9:35 pm

If you are as old as me you will remember the Cairo project,  an attempt to create an object based layer on top of what was then Windows NT (remember that?).  I was lucky enough to see some of the prototype Cairo builds but they never came to fruition.  The best bit was the OFS (Object File System) which was the pre-cursor to WinFS (which also died),  but the flashy bit was the UI which eventually was toned down in Windows 2000.

Well now some crazy guys are re-creating Cairo, or at least the shell bits,  initially for Vista but also later for XP (Hooray).  I’m not entirely sure what they will achieve with this, but almost anything is better than the current Vista shell.  So we’ll have to wait and see, but it looks pretty.

I’m off my FaceBook

Filed under: General, Tech — tim CARMICHAEL @ 8:25 pm

I never quite got into FaceBook,  I see the benefits of FaceBook, MySpace etc but I feel they are not secure enough, I was getting spammed with too many people trying to be my friend and I didn’t like it, so I decided to leave.  I saw too many trawling exploits too…

Also the number of apps was becoming overwhelming and keeping up with it was almost a full time job. I still use LinkedIn as my ‘professional FaceBook’ but until I can overcome my fears of FaceBook trawling, I’ll stay offline.

Hosted Virtual Servers

Filed under: Microsoft — tim CARMICHAEL @ 8:02 pm

Here’s a good idea, hosted Virtual Servers. I needed a new Windows Server so I got a virtual one courtesy of VPS Land (http://www.VPSLand.com).

The reason this is such a good idea is that it reduces the cost of hosting because your hoster can put multiple machines on a single physical machine.  ok performance will suffer somewhat, but they do make several assertions about minimum CPU availability.  The virtual servers are built of Quad core physical servers and mine feels fast to me.  Its cheap too, $17 per month, for a ‘dedicated’ server.

SharePoint vs Wiki vs KM vs CMS

Filed under: Microsoft, SharePoint — tim CARMICHAEL @ 11:25 pm

I love SharePoint and I hate it too.  Its great in concept, but often so rigid in structure when creating a project.  I’ve often thought why not just code the site in ASP.Net when designing a SharePoint solution, but I usually end up with SharePoint because it just has some handy bits and so many corporates are familiar with it.  I usually struggle explaining SharePoint to some customers as its more a dev tool than a solution and its only when we deliver a KM or CMS solution that people get it, or at least understand what it did.

I just saw this article in TechNet magazine about SharePoint as a Wiki, which is a great concept, but one I thought a bit out of SharePoints scope but its interesting.  I’m not convinced about the presentation, but the editing tools are there.  Seeing this would not necessarily encourage me to use a Wiki as a knowledge management tool, but at least its supported in concept.

So now SharePoint can be a Content Management System, and Knowledge Management solution or even a Wiki.

EEEPC or not

Filed under: Tech — tim CARMICHAEL @ 11:02 pm

I was just looking at a friend’s Asus EEEPC which are all the rage right now.  Its very cute, and I was sorely tempted to buy one,  its £229 for the 4GB SSD model.  However,  its just not quite convincing enough for me, yet.  The 7″ display is too small,  I like the SSD but again its too small and needs supplementing with a USB stick, the keyboard is small but I could get used to it.  Its cheap …. did I mention that?  but hey,  I can buy a full laptop for another £70.

What does attract me is the almost fixed function of the device.  ie its designed to do a few things, but do them well, or well enough, specifically low impact tasks like email, web browsing etc.  I thought about its possibility as an eBook, but really I need 1024×768 to get A4 page fidelity enough to read (fit to page view).

So, whilst I like the EEEPC, I think I would actually spend a bit more on a real laptop and then downgrade that to the capability of the EEEPC.  this would be mega performance in comparison although I guess the battery life would be less.

Maybe I could rip the hard disk out and configure a bootable USB stick to start from to save battery.  Windows couldnt save much this way as its too chatty with the registry and is always doing something even when you aren’t.

So, I think I’ll try that first, I have the measure of the EEEPC so thats my target for a ‘utility’ laptop.

Why Won’t Someone make my eBook?

Filed under: Tech — tim CARMICHAEL @ 7:21 pm

I’ve been waiting years for the eBook I need.  I’ve seen and tried the Rocket, the Sony PRS, the iRex illiad, the starEbook and the Kindle. and they all fail miserably for me.  Each one has something good(ish); worthy of note is the illiad has the much needed 1024×768 display; the Kindle has great connectivity. The downside is they all cost huge and offer low bang for the buck.

Tantilisingly, what I need is far simpler than what these guys try to produce.  I don’t need something that works for 40 hours without charge, I dont even need something that weighs less than a feather.  In fact I think my requirement is similar to many pro’s who want eBook capabilities for work purposes.

Actually what I need is more or less a standard cheap notebook and i’ll sacrifice a real keyboard for a tablet style display.  I rarely need more than 3 hours running away from mains charging, and I can accept some weight. I can cope with a shared memory graphics adapter but I do want colour, a 1.4GHz core duo and 1GB RAM. Probably running some lightweight Linux preferably on an SSD disk to save power. At a minimum I want it to render PDF and preferably also DOC and PPT. I’d love it to be able to playback video and audio as well as view images.  I definitely want an RSS client and a web browser.

Tesco can seel me a Fujitsu laptop for £299 with 1.8GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 120GB Disk, DVD Rewriter, 128MB Graphics, 802.11g, Modem, and Vista!  so why can’t I have that in my eBook format? Please!

SPF … Whats That?

Filed under: Tech — tim CARMICHAEL @ 11:44 pm

SPF, Sender Policy Framework thats what.  Its a TXT record you can apply to your DNS zone to allow receiving mail servers to determine whether your email domain is being impersonated to send spam (UCE).  Why is this important?  Well if you have more than 1 SMTP sending server then your IP address ranges may be different.  This means that some of your email may be rejected as spam at servers like Hotmail and never reach the recipients mailbox (even the junk mail folder).  Once added, mail servers can check the SPF record to confirm your email is valid and hopefully your email won’t be rejected.

So what does an SPF record look like ?  Well here’s an example;

 v=spf1 ip4:62.21.98.128/24 a mx include:spf.myispmail.net ?all

But working it out is a chore, so go to an easy to use online configurator here http://old.openspf.org/wizard.html

3GSM excitement

Filed under: Mobile — tim CARMICHAEL @ 11:45 pm

… or rather lack of it.  No WindowsMobile 6.1 announcement from Microsoft,  no real big announcements on Android, no iPhone SDK.  pretty boring.  The most interesting item for me was the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 which departs from previous strategies and embraces WindowsMobile (6.1 in this case) and the Android impinging LIMO initiative.

Have to look forward to CTIA now …

Pay As You Go credit cards

Filed under: General — tim CARMICHAEL @ 11:11 pm

I heard about these a while ago via American Express and their Traveller card which they just withdrew last year.  Basically the concept is its a credit card with no credit, just whatever money you top up directly on to it, typically between £50-£5000.  Its a bit like cash, and I guess similar to the EMV initiative and the Oyster card payment scheme. The upside is you can’t lose more than the topped up balance as there is no credit capability so in theory using it on the internet make sense.  The downside is that you pay a percentage to top up and per transaction.  You can have one from 10 years old so they can be used by kids and topped up by parents.

Hyper-V upgrade

Filed under: Longhorn Server, Microsoft — tim CARMICHAEL @ 9:54 pm

I’ve upgraded my main server to the latest Windows Server 2008 build and installed Hyper-V.  This box is Quad core with 4GB so it should be fine for running the Hyper-V environment.  Hyper-V is an exciting update since it levearges the underlying hardware VM capabilities.  For interest I just tried running Windows XP in VirtualPC under Windows XP under a Hyper-V session, and it works! and is surprinsingly fast, or at least no slower than natively.

What is amazing to me is that this relatively cheap commodity box combined with  the Windows 2008/Hyper-V combo is akin to a mainframe from 10 years ago, think S/390 with MVS or VM/CMS which would have cost millions.

Anyway, as I find more info I’ll report it here, but its looking good.

Spice up your life!

Filed under: General — tim CARMICHAEL @ 9:40 pm

Last night we went to the O2 arena to see the Spice Girls reunion tour. If you haven’t been to the arena before then you are missing a great venue full of restaurants and entertainments.  Its what an evening entertainment should be, relaxed and plenty of space.  We were lucky enough to be on level 1 in the VIP area right by the runway at head height. We had some tv stars and footballers round about us, I had Stacey from EastEnders in the seat in front of me. Shortly before the start David Beckham came in and went down to the front of the runway to rapturous applause.  Right on que at 20:30 the Spice Girls burst onto the stage.  They did all their hits, both as a group and individually and they went straight through to 22:30.  It was a non stop rollercoaster of hits and very enjoyable, my favourite being ‘Who do you think you are’ leading onto a solo runway fashion show parody by Posh on her own.  I have to say it was a great night and worth every penny, who cares if they are doing it for the money!  Every seat in the arena was filled, no gaps anywhere.  I must say I would not want to sit up at the top tier (4) as I think I would have vertigo its so high and steep.    Posh definitely got the biggest cheers every time she sang and I would say she was the crowds favourite.  Anyway, it was a great night out!

The Accidental Fix

Filed under: General — tim CARMICHAEL @ 11:45 pm

As many of you know I was unimpressed by the poor fit of the battery cover for my Dopod C730 (Cavalier).  Last week I ordered a 2250ma battery for my T-Mobile Mail, but unfortunately I received a battery for a C730.  So I tried fitting it to my C730 as it included a new back to house the huge battery.  Surprise, surprise this new (although hideously ugly) battery cover fits properly, Hooray!

Now I just need a trolley to carry it round with me, and I dare not shows its ugly hump in public.

On the internet no one hears you scream!

Filed under: Tech — tim CARMICHAEL @ 6:00 pm

On Saturday I had a call from someone because the email they sent me had bounced back to them as undeliverable.  I immediately thought this must be a problem with this persons email skills, wrong name, domain etc. but I thought I’d check.  I opened Outlook and saw the last email to me at this domain had arrived Thursday morning, and suspiciously, there was no junk mail since then … so alarms bells started ringing in the distance,  but I wasn’t to worried as this was surely simple and quick to check and fix…how wrong I was!

My first inclination was to check the DNS settings at my ISP, especially the MX records.  These were all fine and my MX was pointing as expected to Hotmail,  as I use the Live Custom Domains option. So, nothing wrong there.  Next stop the Live Admin for custom domains.  Bingo! warning messages all over this console;

livedomsweb.jpg

But Hang on! it says my DNS is not configured ‘Pending DNS Configuration’ and a careful check between this and my ISP DNS settings shows no differences … what gives? So after a struggle I find an email address to which Live support queries can be sent and ask them what the pending change is as there is no direct reference as to exactly what setting is wrong.  After 30 mins I hadn’t got a reply (even automated) and I realised that I had used the failing email address so I resubmitted a new ticket.  Shockingly, the new ticket was over 9000 higher than my last one half an hour previously!  I guess a lot of people worldwide have issues with Live.  Apart from the automated reply I have not received a reponse.  So no immediate help there…

So, I needed to be more proactive and sent a few test emails which all disappeared without being received.  So I decided to get low level and see if I could track what was actually happening so my first step was to see where the email sever was being told to send email in case my ISP DNS had failed.

I used the trusty NSLookup utility to see what was going on with DNS.

NSLookup -sil -qMX timcarmichael.com

Server: 209.68.2.46
Address: 209.68.2.46#53

minimum = 60

EEEK!  wordpress.com have become my home nameserver!  they obviously have no knowledge of my real settings and list the MX as GMail.  No wonder I stopped receiving email.  But there is no way to contact their support as they are on holiday… so I contact my ISP to see whats happening and how on earth my real settings got orphaned and wordpress took over.  I didn’t even know that wordpress had nameservers.

Now I knew what the problem was I could fix it.  I unlocked my domain at my ISP and reset the nameservers back to my ISP.  Nothing more I could do now as DNS updates can take up to 48 hours to propagate.

That still leaves me with the question, still unanswered, how did wordpress.com become my nameserver? my domain was definitely locked at my ISP which means no-one but me should be able to make changes.  So how did they?

I’ll update when I know … but I’m not holding my breath as to when I get a response.  What this proves though is that when faced with a problem like this you are really on your own to resolve it, if you can, no matter how urgent and important it is.

The worst thing was I lost all my existing email in the hotmail account!  Fortunately I have a backup, but this would definitely catch the unwary.  When live domains eventually re-found the DNS was correct again it seemed to associate me to a brand new (and empty) hotmail account.  So beware!

What a nightmare, and no-one to help! These free services are only good if you can sort any problems out yourself,  assuming you can discover and understand the problem.  So I hope this helps someone else, or me again in the future.

If you like Skype, you’ll love this

Filed under: Mobile — tim CARMICHAEL @ 11:22 pm

3 are doing a great deal for Skype users.  Buy a Skype phone from 3 on Pay As You Go for £49.95 and a you get ‘unlimited’ Skype calls over 3’s cellular network.  The only constraint is that the PAYG service must be valid or renewed within 30 days of expiring.  But of course you can buy a £10 non-expiring PAYG credit and then just use it as a Skype only phone.  And its a very neat phone too!  Cheaper and better looking and handling than the Belkin and Linksys Skype phones, both of which need Wi-Fi and therefore aren’t portable away from your home or a hotspot like the 3 phone.

Its not a smartphone, but is reasonable to use and for Skype alone its dead easy.  Just click the central Skype button and Skype launches and you can make and receive Skype calls.  Easy!

The only problem I’ve encountered is that the service frequently flip flops to 3G and back which seems to have less signal strength at home. Details here http://www.3skypephone.com/

A real Android handset?

Filed under: Android, Dev, Mobile — tim CARMICHAEL @ 10:48 pm

At CES there’s a buzz that the Wistron GW4 Linux phone could become one of the first real Android handsets.  Apparently their rep announced that it was capable of running the Android image … the question is when can I get one?
